A generous garden annexe in Bishop's Stortford providing independent accommodation for adult children — bedroom, bathroom, living area, and kitchen within a single refined building.
Adult children returning home — whether after university, between jobs, or saving for a deposit — is increasingly common. This Bishop's Stortford family wanted to offer their daughter genuine independence without the cost and upheaval of renting elsewhere.
The garden annexe provides a one-bedroom living space with a separate entrance, fully fitted kitchen, shower room, and a comfortable living area with views across the garden. Cedar cladding and a traditional pitched roof give the building a cottage-like character that complements the Edwardian property without mimicking it.
Planning considerations were central to the project: the annexe was designed within permitted development parameters while maximising internal space. Full insulation, mains connections for water and electricity, and a dedicated pathway from the street ensure the annexe functions as a proper home, not a temporary structure.
