Art Studio Berkhamsted

A professional painter in Berkhamsted needed a dedicated studio with consistent, shadow-free north light — something impossible to achieve in a spare room or converted garage. The garden offered the space and orientation to build exactly what their practice demanded.

We designed a studio with a bank of north-facing roof lights spanning the full width of the building, supplemented by a high-level clerestory on the east elevation for early morning work. The walls are finished in neutral white to provide clean hanging surfaces, and the floor is sealed concrete — durable, level, and easy to clean after messy sessions.

Beyond the lighting, the studio includes built-in storage for canvases and materials, a small kitchenette for long painting days, and full insulation so the space is comfortable even in winter. The black-stained timber exterior gives the building a quiet, gallery-like presence at the end of the garden.
